Counterfeit Cashier's Checks in Circulation
Please be advised that First Bank and Trust Company has notified the FDIC that counterfeit cashier’s checks bearing our name have been found in circulation. These checks come containing a letter regarding a sweepstakes that the recipient has supposedly won issued from a company bearing the name ‘the co-operators’. Often the amounts are issued in $2,194.40. The phone number you are instructed to call is listed as 1-778-987-6895 and the person answering this phone verifies the check. However, this is not a Bank phone number and the check is actually fraudulent. If you receive one of these, please contact:

First Bank and Trust Company was recently the target of a Phishing attack. Some of our clients received an e-mail message asking the client to update account information. The message appeared to come from First Bank and Trust. We did NOT send this message.

Phishing is the practice of sending an e-mail that appears to be from a financial institution with the goal of persuading online banking users to share sensitive information that can be used to commit fraud or identity theft. For additional information and safeguards you can take, please visit the “Security News” section on our website, www.firstbank.com.

If you responded to the Phishing message by sharing personal financial information, please contact us immediately by phone (contact information is listed below for your convenience). We will give you instructions for changing your password and taking other steps to protect your accounts.

First Bank and Trust will NEVER ask you to click on an e-mail link to share sensitive financial information. Please notify us whenever you receive a suspicious e-mail or have any other form of unsolicited contact from individuals seeking personal information about your accounts.

The bank employs several anti-crime tools with Online Banking, such as displaying a client-selected picture and asking verification questions when the login is from a different PC. The spoofed (fake) site has the user ID field and the password field on the login page and does not show a picture. The rule that combats Phishing is "No picture, No password".

Here is how the Phishing scam worked. The criminals built a website that looks like the bank’s login page. Then they sent out thousands of e-mails to addresses that are in the service area of the bank, hoping to hit customers that have Internet (Online) Banking with our bank. They do not know who our customers are or which ones have Online Banking. The message contains a link to the spoofed or fake website where the criminals are attempting to capture the Online Banking user ID and password.
